What Provo Golfers Are Actually Working With

Provo is not short of golf. Timpanogos Golf Club — the course most people still call East Bay — sits right there on the south side, and Provo City rebuilt it a few years back with a lit nine-hole course you can play after dark and a seven-hole beginner layout that uses tennis balls and kid clubs. Riverside is there too, if you are a member.

The problem is not the courses. It is the calendar. From late November until the ground thaws, none of it is open, and the lit nine at Timpanogos does not change that. Add BYU’s schedule to the mix and you get a lot of golfers in this city with time to practice and nowhere to do it for a third of the year.

The 10-Minute Drive From Provo

Get on I-15 southbound and come off two exits later at Springville. That is the whole journey. From the BYU end of town you are looking at roughly ten to twelve minutes, and it runs against the commuter flow for most of the evening.

It is worth comparing that honestly to crossing Provo itself at five o’clock. Ten minutes on an open freeway is usually the quicker trip.

The Season Ends Earlier Than You Think

Hobble Creek, just up the canyon in Springville, is owned by the city and closes at Thanksgiving every year regardless of what the weather is doing. Timpanogos winds down around the same time. That is the last week of November through to sometime in March with no golf in Utah County unless you go indoors — roughly four months, or a third of every year you own a set of clubs.

Most golfers deal with that by stopping. They put the clubs in the garage in December, pull them out in April, and spend the first six weeks of the season getting back whatever they lost. The golfers who do not lose it are the ones who kept swinging somewhere warm, and they tend to show up in spring playing the golf they finished the previous season with.

What You Get When You Arrive

Tour-grade TrackMan

Radar, not cameras. It measures what the club and ball actually did rather than estimating it, which is the difference between practice that compounds and practice that guesses.

Two large private bays

Full-size and enclosed, so you can put a driver through a complete swing without clipping a wall. The bay is yours for the hour rather than a stall in a row.

PGA-certified coaching

Both instructors are PGA certified and teach in the same bays you practice in, on the same numbers. Adult lessons are 90 minutes at $100, youth 60 minutes at $70.

Who Drives Down From Provo

The regulars from Provo fall into a few groups. BYU students and alumni who want to keep a swing through the winter. Golfers who play Hobble Creek, Timpanogos (the old East Bay) or Riverside in season and need somewhere to practice on off-days. Families and friend groups after something better than bowling. And a steady trickle of people booking a lesson because their instructor is here rather than because the bay is.

One practical note: we do not rent clubs, so bring your own set.

Common Questions From Provo Golfers

How long does it really take from BYU?

Ten to twelve minutes in normal conditions. You join I-15 southbound and leave it two exits later at Springville. Going south in the evening, you are traveling against most of the traffic.

Do I need a membership?

No. You can book a single hour for $35 and never come back. If you expect to play through the winter, a punch pass brings that down — five hours for $150, ten for $250, or twenty for $425, which works out at $21.25 an hour.

Is it per person or per bay?

Per bay. Bring three friends and the hourly rate splits four ways.

Can I get a lesson, or just practice?

Both. Steve and Dane are both PGA certified and teach on site. Adult lessons run 90 minutes at $100 and youth lessons 60 minutes at $70. Plenty of Provo golfers book a lesson and then use punch pass hours to work on what came out of it.

What if I want to play at one in the morning?

Then play at one in the morning. The facility runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
